All info for new students on orientation week and welcome events!

In October, we will welcome our new students to their first term of Political Conflict Studies!

There will be an orientation and a welcome week including events that are part of your Onboarding Module that will help you find your way into university life.

While the planning is still under way, here is a first overview of the general timeframes, so that you can plan your arrival to Dortmund and TUDo accordingly:

# Orientation Week, October 05 to 08

  • Orientation week will take place from Tuesday, October 06 to Thursday, October 08
    This includes more informal events to discover campus, get to know fellow students (also from other disciplines if you wish), and clear up questions on timetables etc.:

    • October 06, afternoon: “Speedfriending” - Get to know your fellow PCS first year students! [exact time and location will be posted here as soon as details are confirmed]
    • October 07, around 10:00 hrs: “Campus Rally” - Discover the university campus. [exact meeting location will be posted here]
    • There may be a Pub Crawl organized by the department's student council on October 06; we will share details here as soon as they are confirmed
    • Incoming international students can also attend the International Office's Come2Campus Event.
        

    The orientation week events are entirely voluntary and largely organized and run by our student assistants. They serve to get you engaged with each other and explore campus. This is the week when life returns to campus after the lecture-free period - there are also other student councils active and the AStA often offers additional events and you can pick up your “Ersti-Beutel” (bags for first years).

  
→ Please check out the FAQ section concerning language classes! While Political Science classes will still be open for registration during your first two week in Dortmund, some language classes - especially for those who already speak German - may require you to sign up earlier than that!

 

# Welcome Week, October 12 to 16

  • For PCS, we use the first week of the lecture period as Welcome Week
    This includes :
    • October 12: official welcome event of the university for all new first semester students of TUDo - the Kick Off - that is hosted in the Signal Iduna Park, Dortmund's football stadium, making this a special highlight of the week. All info can be found online here.
    • October 13, 13:00 to ca. 14:30 hrs: official welcome event of our department that is part of the Onboarding Module [the exact location will be posted here and on LSF]

    • October 14, 12:00 to 16:00 hrs: the first date of the Introduction to the German University System which is also part of the Onboarding Module. Part of this even will be an FAQ on class registration on LSF. You will still be able to sign up for first year PCS classes in this session. Language classes may differ from this as they are organized by a different department with their own deadlines and registration procedure. Please check our FAQ on this matter in advance.

      → Please note that first year PCS students must attend the Onboarding Module events!

The weekly PCS first year classes will begin with the second week of the lecture period, starting October 19. Some of the language classes that are not the A1-German class for PCS students, may differ from this.

# General Information on Starting Studies at TUDo

  • The university offers lots of useful information on beginning your studies in Dortmund - feel free to check out their webpages for first years.
  • If you are looking to engage with fellow students on campus and want to explore its international side, it is always worth to check out everything the International Office offers in terms of events and programming throughout the semester, like “Eat & Read” afternoons and language cafés. You can find information on their website here.

We will update this page as dates, times, and location will become more concrete - so stop by again in the coming weeks to learn more about your first two weeks as part of PCS!
